How to Make Your Lash Extensions Last Longer

By The Instyle Glamour Team · 5 June 2026

You’ve just left the salon with a gorgeous full set of lashes — now how do you keep them looking that good for as long as possible? A little aftercare goes a surprisingly long way, and most of it takes seconds.

Keep them dry for the first 24–48 hours

The adhesive that bonds each extension needs time to cure fully. For the first day or two after your appointment, avoid water, steam, sweat and humidity on your lashes — that means skipping the gym, hot showers and saunas. Get past that window and your lashes will be far more durable for the rest of their life.

Avoid oil-based products

Oil is the enemy of lash glue. Oil-based cleansers, makeup removers and rich eye creams break the bond down and cause extensions to slide off early. Switch to a gentle, oil-free, lash-safe cleanser, and check the ingredients on anything you use around the eye area. This single change makes a big difference to how long a set lasts.

Brush, don’t pick

Give your lashes a gentle brush each morning with the clean spoolie we give you — it keeps them neat and tangle-free. What you should never do is pick, pull or rub them. Tugging at extensions takes your natural lashes with them, which damages your lash line and shortens the set. If one feels loose, leave it; don’t pull.

Sleep smart

If you sleep on your side or front, you’re crushing your lashes against the pillow for hours every night, and they’ll lose shape on that side. Try sleeping on your back where you can, and consider a silk or satin pillowcase — it creates less friction than cotton and is kinder to both your lashes and your skin.

Book your refills on time

Your natural lashes shed on their own cycle, taking extensions with them, so a set naturally thins over a few weeks. Booking a refill every two to three weeks tops up the gaps and keeps your lashes looking full continuously — and it’s quicker and cheaper than starting again with a brand-new set. Leave it too long and you’ll need a full set instead.
